Who will look after me?
Your care is led by Risuna, a registered professional nurse and midwife, with a doula alongside you in labour. If you or your baby need a doctor or hospital care at any point, we refer or transfer you.
When should I book my first visit?
As soon as you know you are pregnant. If you are already further along, you are still welcome: we will catch up on the routine checks and bloods at your first visit.
Is a birth at Essence safe for me?
Midwife-led birth suits healthy, low-risk pregnancies. That is why the 36-week gynae visit is compulsory, and why we keep checking throughout. If anything changes, we plan with you for a hospital birth instead.
What happens if I need to go to hospital during labour?
We arrange an ambulance transfer to secondary care. This is only charged if it is needed (R2 500).
How does the birth package payment plan work?
The package is R22 000. A deposit of R5 000 is due by 20 weeks to secure your booking, and the balance of R17 000 by 36 weeks. The deposit is non-refundable, and if the balance is not paid by 36 weeks we cannot facilitate your birth.
Do you accept medical aid?
Essence does not bill your scheme. You pay the clinic directly and claim back from your medical aid yourself. Ask us for an invoice with the codes your scheme needs.
How do I pay?
By EFT into the clinic’s bank account. Your banking details, invoices and statements are in the patient portal once you are registered, so you always have the right reference.
Can my partner be with me?
Yes. Partners are welcome at visits, at the antenatal classes, and at the birth.
What should I bring to my first visit?
Your ID, any previous pregnancy or clinic records, results from tests you have already had, and a list of any medication you take.
Can I see my records and invoices online?
Yes. Registered patients use the patient portal to see appointments, invoices and amounts owing, and to download statements. You sign in with a one-time code sent to your phone or email.
